Bike Around the Walls
Description
On this 2.5-hour bike tour you can enjoy an introduction to mountain biking, on beginner-friendly trails above our beautiful hometown of Ísafjörður as we explore the fjord in all its summer beauty.
The town of Ísafjörður lies beneath the steep slopes of the mountains and is therefore exposed to the risk of avalanches during winter. Because of this, there are large walls in certain places to protect the houses below. During the summer, it is great fun exploring the barriers on a mountain bike. Avalanche barriers along with forests and open trails combine to make a great mountain bike route above the city.
Our guides will make sure to provide you with any assistance you need, as well as telling you stories of life in Ísafjörður, the history of the area, and perhaps some local gossip.
We start the tour from our base camp in Mávarður where our bikes are stored. After a short introduction we started biking and we cycle up into the mountains and the first steep incline that takes us to the avalanche barrier behind the houses in Urðarvegur. We sneak behind the towering walls and bike along the backsie, popping back out to continue along the road where we find a completely different type of barrier. Up and over this one we bike against our forest in Tungudalur where we find the marvellous Buná river and waterfall. For a great view of the fjord, we cycle through the valley to the final barrier. A short, slightly steep climb up the wall is worth seeing. From here, it is easy to return to the city.
